| "Most of my paintings start with a visual
idea. This painting, however, was inspired by some words written by my husband, Jay. His
inspiration was a special place on an Indian reservation at the base of the San Jacinto
Mountains in Palm Springs, California. Jay and I hike in this area whenever we can. We
escape the modern world in these canyons and find evidence of a people who lived with
nature in a harmonious way. We try to reconnect, if only momentarily, to the land as these
people did." "Jay used words to express our feelings about the way in which all ancient peoples had interwoven their lives into the rhythms of the natural world. He refined and condensed his words into a single line, while I found two ideas that, when combined, seemed to visually and emotionally embody the message he had expressed with his words." "I was completely intrigued with the idea of creating a painting that visually flowed from left to right and was linked to a written poem that would run directly under it... words and pictures, simultaneously telling a story. As I developed the painting, Jay and I asked poet Elise Maclay to interpret Jay's written idea as a single line of poetry. The result of all our efforts is When the Wind Had Wings, a very personal artistic statement and a wonderful collaboration of artists." Bev Doolittle |
